I was in Dover Street Market yesterday and had a conversation with the shoemaker from Dr. Martens. When I first heard about this bespoke service, I thought it was going to be a made-to-measure service or just a simple customization service but I was wrong. They are doing a full bespoke service and measure your both feet to create a wooden pair of last, with total number of 4 fittings. Price ranges from £250 over £1,000 depending on the choice of material. You can choose your material, welt style, welt colour, sole style, sole colour, eyelet colours & etc. However, unfortunately, you CANNOT choose 2 leathers and mix them into one shoe.
My personal opinion is that £250 for a bespoke leather shoe, is a steal! Over £1,000 for a pair of Dr. Martens? Not sure. Not saying Dr. Martens is less better than John Lobb, but you could get a pair of shoes made from John Lobb for £1,200.
I was lucky to meet and have a conversation with the shoemaker when I was there, but be sure to book an appointment just to be sure. Also, there are DSM staff (Brian) who has good knowledge about the bespoke service so don't be too upset if you don't get to see the shoemaker.
BTW, the shoemaker told me I can e-mail him to receive information brochure/catalogue to see all the possible options for materials, welts, soles, eyelets to get some design inspirations, so be sure to drop him few lines to request for the brochure.
